What is the Outline Pane, and why would I use it?

Once you have created a map, the Outline Pane provides a handy list of all your topics. It allows you to select topics (and/or connectors) to modify them.

Click the Outline button on the BigPicture ribbon

Click the Outline button on the BigPicture ribbon

View the Outline pane

This opens the Outline pane with all topics listed in Treeview (hierarchical) order. You then have several possibilities.

Change the label of a topic

Edit the text for a topic's label to change it in the map.

Right-click a topic

You can right-click a topic to bring up the usual BigPicture shortcut menu, where you can modify the topic in many ways.

Show connectors

You can check the Show Connectors option to include all connectors in the list. Then you can right-click any connector to show its BigPicture shortcut menu. From there, you can edit the text associated with a connector to add a new label or edit an existing label.

Show in Left-Right Order vs. Treeview Order

Click the Left-Right Order button, a toggle, to show the topics in left-right order. The button's label changes to Treeview Order so that you can toggle back again.

Click the Find and Replace button to see the usual find and replace options. For example, this would allow you to change "units" to "items" for each topic label in the map.
